Located in the east end of Ottawa, Blackburn Hamlet is Ottawa's only community entirely surrounded by greenbelt that is protected by the National Capital Commission. Because of this, it is a most sought-after community in which to live.
Blackburn Hamlet was precisely what environmentalists and eco friendly people were thinking when they coined the term "pedestrian friendly". Municipal parks also abound and residents enjoy walking trails throughout the community - many of these trails lead to parkland ideal for hiking or cross-country skiing. Children can walk to neighbourhood schools, in many cases, without ever crossing a street.
Blackburn Hamlet is an easy commute to the core of the city, a 15-minute drive away. There is also close access to major highways and excellent bus service to any part of the greater City of Ottawa.
A multitude of services within the community include our own library, a community hall, pharmacies, banks, grocery store, bakery, florist, a hardware store, hairdresser, barber shop, etc. Major shopping centers are just 10 minutes away.
Of course a family oriented community requires sports facilities and Blackburn Hamlet boasts many, including an arena, tennis courts, the largest group of soccer fields in the region, baseball diamonds, basketball courts, and one of the best known and best loved toboggan hills in the region.
The area was originally settled between 1803-1811 by people of English, Irish, Scottish and French descent. The name Blackburn derives from a past member of parliament, Robert Blackburn, who was instrumental in establishing a post office during the 1880's. In 1967, Costain Estates Ltd. developed a model community and it was then named Blackburn Hamlet. With approximately 3000 homes, the current population numbers close to 10,000.
Blackburn Hamlet offers a wide variety of home styles and price ranges. While it is a very stable community, there are people moving into and out of Blackburn for a variety of reasons. Most of these homes were built in the late 60's and early 70's. Many have been beautifully updated and renovated and feature hardwood floors, main floor family rooms, large lots and mature landscaping. If a home backs onto the greenbelt, it is a real bonus.
